CBS news coverage (here) reported that a small militant minority of women’s liberationists gathered across the country on August 26th. This is yet another attempt to invalidate the tens of thousands of men and women who marched for the equality of the sexes. Is this what you call small, CBS? Stay strong!

Tens of thousands of men and women marched down 5th avenue taking up all lanes of traffic in New York City Yesterday! The turnout was more than organizers had expected and greatly appreciated; the “fight in the city, in the political arena” was a huge success! On the 50th anniversary of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote, NOW organized the “Women’s Strike for Equality.” There were demonstrations and rallies in more than 90 major cities and small towns in 42 states. Some 50,000 women marched on Fifth Avenue in New York and across the country more than 100,000 women were involved.
On the 50th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, join us on the march for Women’s Equality in cities across the country!! At the New York City rally, Friedan and Millett are set to speak and then lead the march down one-lane of 5th Avenue!
On August 10th, the Equal Rights Amendment was passed in the U.S. House of Representatives by a vote of 350-15!
This is a major victory for the equality of the sexes! Stand with NOW for the passage of ERA in the Senate as well!
Lead by chapter President, Ivy Bottini, New York NOW demonstrated at the Statue of Liberty as a prelude to the Strike for Women’s Equality to be held later this month. The demonstrators draped a huge banner over the railing which read, “WOMEN OF THE WORLD UNITE!”

In 14 cities across the country, NOW demonstrated against the National Association of Manufacturers & Department of Labor for the exclusion of guidelines on sex discrimination from the Labor Department’s “Order 4” which requires affirmative action programs only for minorities.
In response to these demonstrations, the Secretary of Labor has promised to set up a group to develop guidelines on women.

NOW conducted demonstrations in 14 cities against the National Association of Manufacturers & Department of Labor closed-circuit television conference on equal opportunity to protest the exclusion of guidelines on sex discrimination from the Labor Department’s “Order 4,” which required affirmative action plans for minorities only.
The next day, the Secretary of Labor promised to set up a group to develop guidelines on women.
After much pressure from New York NOW, New York City finally passed a bill banning sex discrimination in public accommodations. This is the first law of its kind in any major city in the country, a huge victory for NOW!

Under Executive Order 11375, which bans the discrimination of sex in hiring and employment in the federal workforce and on the part of government contractors, NOW filed a blanket sex discrimination complaint with the Office of Federal Contract Compliance (OFCC) against 1,300 corporations for failing to file affirmative action plans for hiring women.
