Women’s Strike for Equality TODAY!

On the 50th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, join us on the march for Women’s Equality in cities across the country!! At the New York City rally, Friedan and Millett are set to speak and then lead the march down one-lane of 5th Avenue!

ERA PASSES THE HOUSE!

On August 10th, the Equal Rights Amendment was passed in the U.S. House of Representatives by a vote of 350-15!

This is a major victory for the equality of the sexes! Stand with NOW for the passage of ERA in the Senate as well!

NOW demonstrates against the National Association of Manufacturers & Department of Labor

In 14 cities across the country, NOW demonstrated against the National Association of Manufacturers & Department of Labor for the exclusion of guidelines on sex discrimination from the Labor Department’s “Order 4” which requires affirmative action programs only for minorities.

NYC bans sex discrimination in public accommodations

After much pressure from New York NOW, New York City finally passed a bill banning sex discrimination in public accommodations. This is the first law of its kind in any major city in the country, a huge victory for NOW!

NOW files blanket sex discrimination complaint with the OFCC

Under Executive Order 11375, which bans the discrimination of sex in hiring and employment in the federal workforce and on the part of government contractors, NOW filed a blanket sex discrimination complaint with the Office of Federal Contract Compliance (OFCC) against 1,300 corporations for failing to file affirmative action plans for hiring women.

The House holds hearings on educational discrimination

NOW has long agitated for hearings to be held on education discrimination, and finally the U.S. House held the first hearings of it’s kind in United States history resulting in 1,250 pages of testimony.

NOW establishes a Federal Compliance Committee

NOW has established a Federal Compliance Committee tasked specifically with developing a program and procedures for filing sex discrimination complaints with the Office of Federal Contract and the EEOC. The objective of this committee is to push for the enforcement of federal equal opportunity laws for women.
